Kalimba: My Safe Haven
There is no denying how much the pandemic affected our lives. People are losing their jobs, resources, and even their sanity. As a student, shifting to online classes was difficult, until one day, a kalimba cover of Oceans was played as our closing prayer. Listening to this enchanting music, I felt like my burdens were lifted, I became more focused on my connection with the Lord. I was overwhelmed with schoolwork and chores at home, but I thought to myself, there’s always a room for rest, and maybe a kalimba is worth my rest time. Even with what I’m going through, I still managed to enjoy my own company. I also played for my family and taught them how to play. Playing the kalimba is one of our get-togethers while staying at home. We were happy, until I lost my aunt to cancer and later on, we found out, she also had COVID-19 while staying at the hospital. The whole family was heartbroken. We were quarantined. I didn’t feel safe in this place but maybe the feeling of security and relief doesn’t revolve around what I’m surrounded with, it can also be found within. With God, my family and my kalimba, together, I found my safe haven, my peace.
