This is a song written in the early 1960s by Jim McLean in memory of the infamous massacre of the Glencoe MacDonalds in 1692. Easy to play, it has a distinctive Scottish feel (it is based on an older Scottish march called “Colonel Robertson”). In North America it came to be played as a waltz – this works beautifully on a kalimba (I only altered one note). The video is there to give you a feeling of the melody.
CHORUS
27 652 23 132
Oh cruel is the snow that sweeps Glencoe
27 652 546 6
And covers the grave o’ Donald
27 652 23132
And cruel was the foe that raped Glencoe
231 54 266 5
And murdered the house o’ MacDonald
VERSE
257 261° 27275
They came through the blizzard, we offered them heat
561 62 272 76
A roof ower their heads, dry shoes for their feet
257 261° 27275
We wined them and dined them, they ate o’ our meat
23154266 5
And slept in the house O’ MacDonald
