When I was a little girl, I was taught that for every struggle and pain, there is a cure. I saw how my mom nursed my wound when once, I slipped. My brother, meanwhile, placed my sister’s hand under a running water, when she got burned.
I still hold on to this belief — until COVID-19 pandemic came. Like every individual who fights hard to survive this turmoil, I struggled, too. Since beginning of quarantine, every day has become a battle of keeping myself sane.
As fear and uncertainties looms, that’s when I discovered kalimba — my refuge. It became my safe haven when emotional distress kicks in. Every time I play a song, it calms my soul, warding off worries and frustrations. It became my peace and quiet when my mind transports me to negative thoughts.
Kalimba has been my faithful company during isolation. When I think of enjoyable times I am outside, it reminded me that happiness can be found by playing kalimba inside the comforts of my home. That even in difficulties, I can create something beautiful out of the catastrophe we are in — and that is music. And I believe that what medicine cannot cure, music can heal it.
I cannot compare the agony of those who have lost their loved ones or workers who lost their jobs in this crisis. But if there’s another cure for this pandemic, it’s music. And if I can only play my kalimba to every struggling soul right now, I will. Because I was once taught that for every struggle and pain, there is a cure. Kalimba healed me, and so will they.
