A 19th century French sea shanty, it was inspired by the battle between the Kent and La Confiance in 1800. Despite the title, the battle did not take place on August 31st but on October 7th. The song is regularly sung by service-men and veterans of the French Navy on formal occasion. Also sung on less formal occasions in bars in most French ports.
