Breaking Up Is Hard to Do is a signature pop-doo-wop song co-written and performed by Neil Sedaka with lyricist Howard Greenfield. Released in June 1962, it quickly became a defining hit of its era, topping the Billboard Hot 100 in August of that year. Known for its iconic “come-a come-a down, dooby doo down down” scat intro—a spontaneous vocal improvisation by Sedaka that became part of the final record, the original version is “two minutes and sixteen seconds of pure pop magic.
