To Love is to Suffer
Suffering is a backbone of loving. Can you recall a story which is just all about love – like love only, no sad parts nor difficult problems encountered? If you had, then, wow! I still haven’t seen one for I think there is none. If you love, there is a suffering intended to be felt. A suffering felt to give lessons. A suffering learned to display change.
There is this TV series that was on my head that kept me awake all night. It was My Destiny that starred Carla Abellana, Tom Rodrigues and Rhian Ramos as the lead cast. I was so into My Destiny. I loved the story. I loved the opening theme which is “Kung Hindi Ikaw” by James Wright. That is the love song I like and I will tell why.
The song made me realize that when loving, it is not just about happiness, pleasure, and delight. It is also full of blues and glooms. It is because when I was a kid, what I had always known is that when someone loves, she is happy. Yet as I grow up and see what the world really looks like, I have been positively reacting to what Woody Allen has said. “To love is to suffer. To avoid suffering one must not love. But then one suffers from not loving. Therefore, to love is to suffer; not to love is to suffer; to suffer is to suffer. To be happy is to love. To be happy, then, is to suffer, but suffering makes one unhappy. Therefore, to be happy one must love or love to suffer or suffer from too much happiness.”
Realization really hits us real hard, right? There is really nothing wrong in loving. The only thing that makes it bad is that we are doing shameless things because of loving. There is nothing wrong with suffering a bit. What makes it a not good thing to do is that if it really hits us really hard which might negatively alter us.
